In this episode, Liz and Jesse are joined by Margaret Cahill, Clinical Nurse Consultant with the Eat, Walk, Engage program from the RBWH. We hear about her amazing career journey and get a lot wiser on the topic of delirium and how to prevent and manage in the acute hospital setting
Margaret’s Five Things:
Delirium is common, dangerous and distressing for patient and family.
Importance of screening and recognition and some features and tools.
Delirium has a huge impact (up to 30% increase) on nursing workload, prevention is key.
Delirium is often preventable through maintaining hydration, vigilance around high-risk medications, environment and mobility and nutrition and hydration.
Delirium management is a team sport and the nurse is positioned well to captain the multidisciplinary prevention and management.

In this episode, Liz and Jesse are joined by Shania Tribel. Shania is a registered nurse who works in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, or “Recovery” for the old school crew. The medium was the message with this episode – organised, succinct, and informative. This is a must listen for those developing confidence with clinical handover and those teaching it.
Shania’s Five Things:
Use a standardised and consistent template/format.
Handover should be done with a brief head to toe assessment.
The patient is a member of the clinical handover.
Take your time to save your time.
Use time management hacks to form your handover throughout the shift.

Liz has PhD in the wellbeing of healthcare professionals and is an experienced social worker with over 25 years in critical care. Liz works as the staff wellbeing consultant at Royal Women's & Brisbane Hospital. Jesse is the Nursing and Midwifery Director of Education at RBWH, a critical care nurse and avid learner who has worked in a broad range of roles throughout the health service and has a particular interest in organisational psychology and team science.
