In this episode, Liz and Jesse are joined by Margaret Cahill, Clinical Nurse Consultant with the Eat, Walk, Engage program from the RBWH. We hear about her amazing career journey and get a lot wiser on the topic of delirium and how to prevent and manage in the acute hospital setting
Margaret’s Five Things:
Delirium is common, dangerous and distressing for patient and family.
Importance of screening and recognition and some features and tools.
Delirium has a huge impact (up to 30% increase) on nursing workload, prevention is key.
Delirium is often preventable through maintaining hydration, vigilance around high-risk medications, environment and mobility and nutrition and hydration.
Delirium management is a team sport and the nurse is positioned well to captain the multidisciplinary prevention and management.

Liz has PhD in the wellbeing of healthcare professionals and is an experienced social worker with over 25 years in critical care. Liz works as the staff wellbeing consultant at Royal Women's & Brisbane Hospital. Jesse is is a critical care nurse and educator who has worked in a broad range of roles throughout the health service and has a particular interest in organisational psychology and team science.
