Margaret’s Five Things:
- Delirium is common, dangerous and distressing for patient and family.
- Importance of screening and recognition and some features and tools.
- Delirium has a huge impact (up to 30% increase) on nursing workload, prevention is key.
- Delirium is often preventable through maintaining hydration, vigilance around high-risk medications, environment and mobility and nutrition and hydration.
- Delirium management is a team sport and the nurse is positioned well to captain the multidisciplinary prevention and management.
